9 GREEN MEETINGS IN REYKJAVIK The total energy usage of Reykjavik city derives from 100% renewable sources. 80% from hydropower and 20% from geothermal energy. All buildings in Reykjavik are heated with geothermal water making all venues and accomoda ons naturally sustainable and eco-friendly. The Icelandic government has stated an objec ve of making Iceland the first na on to use only renewable energy for its power in the near future according to the Icelandic Na onal Strategy for sustainable development. Reykjavik is a global centre for renewable energy research as universi es, government departments, public and private companies all contribute. Former President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson and the Icelandic na on were presented with the first-ever Atkinson Center Award for Global Leadership in Sustainable Development for promo ng the use of renewable energy while reducing its own reliance on fossil fuels. The City of Reykjavik won the Nordic Nature and Environment Prize 2014 and the city is now in third place in the Global Des na on Sustainability Index 2017.
